7. Course rules

7.1. General requirements
Participants must complete the whole distance within the cut-off time, following the set route non-stop. Each participant decides their own pace and where and how long to rest. Throughout the race each participant must carry the full set of mandatory gear in their own backpack or waist belt; it may not be handed over on course or to other people. Judges may check the gear and its contents at any moment of the race, and participants must present it for inspection. Non-compliance may lead to disqualification. Being accompanied on any part of the course by people not registered for the race is prohibited.

Music: playing music through speakers on the course is prohibited. Headphones are allowed but must be removed near CPs and when crossing roads. Breaking these rules (including using speakers) may result in a warning or penalties up to disqualification, at the organizers' discretion.

7.2. Route and checkpoints (CP)

The course passes through mandatory checkpoints (CP); visiting all CPs is required for a result to count. Sections between CPs follow logical routes: roads, paths and marked sections. Marking: paper signs or paint on trees, rocks and other objects. Sections that may fall in the dark are additionally marked with reflective tags. Important: the 165 km and 66 km distances are not marked; participants follow the GPS track.

7.3. Progress control

Participants record their passage with electronic check-ins. A missing check-in at a CP may lead to disqualification. Individual CPs operate only until their cut-off time. CPs may include:

  • food stations (FS) with light food and drinks
  • water stations (WS) with water only
  • life bases (LB) on ultra distances — hot food, a place to rest, and a drop bag (a backpack with personal belongings handed to the organizers in advance)

A detailed description of CPs, FS, WS and LB will be published in each distance's description.

To be classified, a participant must cross the finish line. If a participant cannot make the cut-off, they must phone the organizers with their location. A participant who drops out must inform the organizers and, if possible, reach the nearest CP. Participants who drop out arrange their own return to the base camp.

7.4. Prohibited actions (lead to disqualification or time penalties)

  • Using outside assistance (transport, food, physical or technical support from others), except where provided by the organizers.
  • Giving your gear to others to carry (backpack, poles, extra food, etc.). If the helper is also a participant, both are disqualified.
  • Leaving the route to shorten the distance or bypass obstacles or difficult sections, gaining an advantage over other participants. Skipping any checkpoint (CP).
  • Tampering with course marking, littering or damaging nature.

7.5. Mandatory rules of conduct

  • The bib must be attached at the front and clearly visible.
  • Participants must follow the principles of fair play.
  • If you find an injured participant, you must help and inform the organizers (bib number, location, nature of injury).
  • Organizers, volunteers and rescue services may check participants' health and remove them from the course if their health is at risk or rules are broken.

7.6. Running with a dog

Running with a dog is allowed, provided it is on a leash at the start and on a leash or harness throughout the course, under the participant's constant control. A participant running with a dog is not eligible for prizes, whatever the result. Their time is recorded, but in the results they are marked as disqualified (DSQ), and the result is not submitted to the UTMB Index.
